Day 14: Kakuli Camp to Wildlife Camp South Luangwa National Park

Writer's picture: Piet FaurePiet Faure

Today was a sad day. We were leaving a wonderful camp with staff who felt like they were lifelong friends. We also said farewell to our very kind friends Paddy and Elley who so generously invited us to join them and their friends at Kakuli.

We did a game drive on our transfer out to where we had left our vehicles at Kapani Camp, one of Tide and Time's other lodges. The vehicles were loaded and we have now driven the very short distance to our new camp, Wildlife Camp on the Luangwa River.

The camp is situated on the other side of the river, in what is called the Management Section. The park is unfenced and is open to everything. We have a delightful spot on the banks of the river. The views are picture book and as I write I am looking out over the river with fish eagles, hippos, monkeys and even crocs on display.

The facilities are first class. We are the only campers here. A bar/restaurant, swimming pool under thatch, lovely lawns cut by hippos at night and beautiful shady trees complete the picture.

We will probably stay here at least two nights, maybe three. I am also keen to try out another campsite about 20km away in a seldom visited park of the park. This is in the Nsefu Sector which is community run and all benefits accrue to them. A night drive is planned for tomorrow.

Camping fees are $10 per person (R160) so reasonable for what is on offer.

Did mom and Connie take a dip in that pool? Word on the street is that they are capable of braving any water in any weather 😎
