Day 19: Kapishya To Mutinondo Wilderness

Writer's picture: Piet FaurePiet Faure

Kapishya was wonderful, Mark Harvey, the owner, very hospitable and a mine of information.

Mark’s brother, Charlie, is the current owner of Shiwa House an enormous home built in grand scale in about 1928. Google is your friend here, so I will not repeat all the details.

Tours are on offer graciously led by Charlie’s wife. She kept us interested for well on an hour and a half showing us around and recounting the history. The farming enterprise attached to the house is huge. Cattle, bees, coffee and other crops all contribute. All in all a worthwhile stop.

The road to Mutinondo Wilderness is in a southerly direction along the T2, a main artery. So called main artery, but in reality bits of tar joined by frequent giant potholes. Careful driving is needed and progress is measured. The potholes are recognized by giant black skid-marks on the tar. These from the many trucks that travel this road.

Mutinondo Wilderness is reached by a 40km gravel track in good condition. What a find. It is a true wilderness with many walks amongst the giant granite koppies and the trees. The campsite is well spread amongst the sites and the facilities, simple, but really good. Again google is your friend.

It borders the Luangwa valley to the east, but is about 1200m higher up. This translates to wonderfully warm days, but cold nights. We are spending three nights here.

The website has all the pics.

If you're spending 3 nights there, hopefully, the next blog will have some pics 😀 You can't say: "It is a true wilderness with many walks amongst the giant granite koppies and the trees." I'm speaking for all the fans here- I'd love to see your pics of the place 😀
