Day 21: Mutinondo

Writer's picture: Piet FaurePiet Faure

This wilderness camp is delightful in every way. The facilities are up to scratch, the campsites widely spaced and under lovely shaded trees. We are really enjoying ourselves.

Last night we decided to be spoilt and the small kitchen prepared us dinner. A simple, but very wholesome meal of three courses. We were in the company of Lari, the owner, and Andy, who was on a motorcycle. Tough guy had been around the Americas (south and north), then shipped the bike to Cape Town. He is on his way to Dar Es Salaam.

Today was another hike around the area of about 10km. This time in a westerly direction. The large granite koppies I spoke of are estimated to be about 1.3 to 1.6 billion or million years old. I can assure you after walking up the steep ascents and steep decents of about 6 of them you fell like 1.3 million years old.

The walk was wonderful, under shade canopy for most of the way, two steep climbs and then the most special river pool to have some snacks. Good exercise for about 3.5 hours.

Probably going to relax for the rest of the day ahead of our move tomorrow to the Bangweulu Wetlands. We have planned two nights there in the hope of seeing the Shoebill Stork.

Mutinondo is a wonderful wilderness area not to be missed if one travelling in this area.
