Day 8 Livingstone

Writer's picture: Piet FaurePiet Faure

Maramba River Lodge is very pleasant on the banks of the Marfamba River, a tributary of the Zambesi. The campsite is peaceful, offering good shade, clean ablutions and all that one could want in a campsite.

The situation is prime being 4km from the Victoria Falls. The falls being our objective today. An early start saw us at the gate and for a reasonable fee of ZAR320 gained access to the site. We explored everything that was on offer, got completely wet and had some decent exercise dropping down to the falls base. First time for us to see the falls from the Zambian side. One does not get that perspective of how big they actually are from this side, but spectacular nonetheless. The Zambesi is full so there was a lot of water about.

A very pleasant time of about 4 hours saw us exiting and, of course, Chantal and Conny had to visit the craft market. Not my best, but fortunately it is quite a bit smaller than the Zimbabwean side. Very few people visiting this world heritage site.

Tomorrow a travelling day to Lusaka. 550 odd km, but will take the whole day. We plan to stay at a campsite on the eastern outskirts of Lusaka so as to give us an easy exit to South Luangwa.

Livingstone has a large Shoprite which is very well stocked. The Shoprites in our neighboring countries are more like our local Pick n Pay Claremont. Amazing the add ons in the store. We used the banking facility to change money. Effortless and very competitive rates. So much easier than using a regular bank. MTN has provided us with Zambian simcards which are working well. I have found it easier to have a second phone and put the sim into that, then use it as a hotspot with my regular phone. Works perfectly and one does not have the problem of your phone changing with putting in a new simcard. Unless your phone is dual sim....
