Day 9: Nossob to Calvinia.

I had elected to leave one day early as I did not want to arrive home on the Sunday. An early start saw me closing the Nossob gate at 05h40 after the paperwork in the office was done. I was now smelling home, and it is 4.5 hours to Twee Rivieren I could not hang about. Another spectacular Kalahari sunrise, cool air, and no other cars made for good progress. After about 10km a lioness blocked the road and was calling for the family to join, another 10km saw a cheetah in the road for a great sighting and further on a group of four Brown Hyena. This on a non-official game drive. Maybe we should just adjust tactics and forget looking in the veld and just look at the road.

About 10km short of Twee Rivieren saw the traffic pick up a bit and a clutch of cars proclaimed a cheetah. The grass at this point was about 1m high. In hunting terms “I glassed the area” and picked up the head. Well after what I had seen previously I disappointed the cars there by showing little interest.

Twee Rivieren check out was smooth and what else can you say about the drive south? Outside Brandvlei was an isolated storm that had rain pouring down so hard one had to proceed with caution at 50km/h. After a flash it was over and the heat returned.

It had been a long day so when Calvinia arrived I decided to overnight. My choice was our business park neighbor at Northgate Estate Country Hotels. At R 300/night it was real good value.
